Hello Friends of the Road,
It’s already August. Hard to believe isn’t it? Soon schools will be back in session and history teachers everywhere will be talking about the Revolutionary War, and maybe, just maybe, they’ll be talking about the Crown Point Road. We all know how it played a role in the war, but most kids do not. That is why we spend time doing public outreach. The CPR was important well before the Revolution War, during the war, and certainly after the war.
I have a new website I’d like to share with you. It is a great resource for history of American forts. The Vermont section has history of 38 forts! They include Fort Vengeance in Pittsford and Fort Ranger at Gookin’s Falls (aka Mead’s Falls). Thank you Elaine Purdy for sharing this website with me! I’ve got another treasure to share with you today. It is an old local newspaper article from September of 1908 entitled “The Old Crown Point Road”. I have attached a scan of the article. I owe this to Rebecca Hougher. Great find!
I have more treasures stored up, but I think I’ll save them for future ramblings.

• August 17: On Saturday the 17th, we will re-visit the site of the historic battle in Hubbardton. Yes indeed, it is an interesting area filled with history. We will focus on deciphering the famous Gerlach map. Goals will be to orient the map, and use his distance references to find out what happened and where. Meet at Hubbardton Battlefield Visitors Center at 10am to join us for a day of orienteering and talking history. Bring a lunch and plenty of water. Leaders are Jim Moore and Dale Christie. For more info, email Jim at jim.moore2@gmail.com
• August 24: On Saturday the 24th, at 10am, meet at the Hubbardton Battlefield Visitors Center for a segment of the 8th annual driving tour. Jim Rowe will lead the tour and the day will end at the Otter Creek in Center Rutland. There will be several stops along the way for discussion. People should bring snacks/water. It will take about 3 hours. Admission will be charged at the Hubbardton Battlefield and will allow entrance to visitor center and site. For more info, call Jim at (802) 434-7415
Are you still with me? I know some may tune out when I put on my marketing hat. Well for those who stayed tuned in, I’ve got a sneak peak about a previously unreleased outing. V.P. Barry Griffith will be a featured speaker at the upcoming VOCA meeting in September. So if that peaks your interest, you should keep the 21st open for a visit to the big city of Vergennes. Don’t know what VOCA is? Well it is one the best organizations around. I’ll have more to say about this event next month, but for now, you can learn more about VOCA here: https://voca58.org
Until we meet again… remember your history, and keep an eye out for treasures. There are many out there waiting to be found!
