The days are quickly going by and the exciting end to end walk of the entire Crown Point Road is coming up soon! Below is an update from Becky Tucker:

August 27, 2014 Here are the plans so far. You will notice that the last 2 days’ travel have not been completely decided. I will send plans as soon as they are. If you see a question mark somewhere, it is because I am not sure. For instance, I hate to impose on Walter Phelps twice. Day 11 is perfect for his place, Day 10 is a little far to drive…

In August 2009 for our 250th anniversary End-to-End Jim Moore did most of the planning with help from Jim Rowe and Barry and Barbara Griffith, and many others I was not aware of, then they walked. As Jim Moore described it, they planned where they would stop each day beforehand, then carried their tents, and other equipment to that place in the morning, parked a vehicle, and returned to begin the walk itself by 9:00 a.m. It was a lot of “shuffling” but worked well in 2009, so we’ll follow those plans in 2014. If you are coming from away and need an overnight camping place Friday the 12th, check at the Fort at No. 4 603-826-5700. There’s a Holiday Inn at Exit 7 on I91, and another few motels over in Charlestown NH, or call me.

Friday, September 12, 2014 7:00 p.m. John-Eric Nelson, CPRA member, to repeat his April 26th talk on the History of the Crown Point Road at the Fort at #4.

DAY 1 Saturday, September 13, 2014 Meet at NH Marker #1 at (290) Main Street, Charlestown NH (across from the Middle School) at 9:30. We’ll leave about 10 a.m. follow all 7 NH Markers and VT Markers 1-3 and stop at Keith Ferguson’s on Spencer Hollow Road, Springfield. Charlestown Historical Society people will join us and relate some history. This day’s walk will start at 10, but all other days will begin at 9:00 a.m. and vehicle spotting at end of trip should be done before 9:00 am.m.
I’ve got some volunteer boats (canoes, etc.) to carry us across the Connecticut River to the location of the old Wentworth’s Ferry crossing on today’s Route 5 in Springfield VT, then we’ll go into the woods and under Interstate 91 and to our stopping place at Ferguson’s, where we can camp over, or not, as you like. I need to know if you will be joining us this day especially, to be sure we have enough watercraft for us all. You can walk across the Cheshire Bridge to avoid the water crossing, but it adds another mile or 2 to the trip. Keith Ferguson has tent sites, toilets, water, a brook, fire rings, and a dining shelter, and will take a donation to cover electricity, etc. Spot cars at Fergusons. His phone 802-885-3273.

DAY 2 Sunday September 14, 2014 Meet at Ferguson’s on Spencer Hollow Road, Springfield, 9:00 a.m. From Marker #4 on Crown Point Road Springfield, we’ll travel in the Eureka Section of Springfield, Barlow Road, Town Farm road to Weathersfield near Wellwood Orchards. Stop for the day at Marker #17 Grout Cemetery and overnight at Crown Point Campground nearby. Weathersfield hikers will join us at CP Country Club (Weathersfield-Springfield border) and accompany us through town today and tomorrow. Weathersfield Historical Society has promised a potluck supper for us this evening. WHS will need to know our numbers, so if you are planning to join us this evening, let me know beforehand. The Campground at 131 Bishop Road, Weathersfield, phone number is 802-263-5555 – Bonnie and Shawn Crumb. Their rates are $30 a night (for one tent 2 adults 2 children) Tell them you are with the CPRA group, as they said they’d save some sites together for us. Spot cars at Grout Cemetery, Weathersfield.

DAY 3 Monday September 15, 2014 From Grout Cemetery, Weathersfield to 774 Brook Road in Cavendish near the home of Jim and Kathy Zimmer (802-226-7422). At 9:00 a.m. we’ll cross the stone wall behind the Plain Cemetery and walk by a good trail to the Branch Brook and cross it here near the original ten-mile Marker #18, then follow Branch Brook road into Amsden and visit the 11-mile Marker. Then it’s across Route 106 at the Weathersfield Transfer Station and up the hill into the woods to the top of Greenbush road in Cavendish at Marker 24 (Paine’s Tavern location). Then we’ll follow West Road to Field hill and arrive at 774 Brook Road, Cavendish and the Zimmer place. Spot cars at Zimmers.

DAY 4 Tuesday, September 16, 2014 774 Brook Road, Cavendish to Chapman Road, Ludlow. At 9:00 a.m. From Zimmers we’ll go through the woods, guided by Jim Zimmer and family, visit the grave and marker of an unknown F&I War soldier near Marker #29, then up Brook road and South Reading road, down through the woods from the Coffeen Cemetery (Marker #29A) to 20-Mile Stream Road and campground and end at 1093 Chapman Road (Bill and Jan Cole cell 860-707-4287) in Ludlow, Marker #32A. We’ll overnight at Meadowbrook Campground at the 20-Mile Camp location. Belle McKnight has running water, pit toilets, a dining shelter and space for tents. There’s also a pond. DAY 5 Wednesday, September 17, 2014 At 9:00 a.m. From 1093 Chapman Road, Ludlow Marker 32A through Plymouth, by Camp Plymouth State Park, to Kyle Perry’s farm in Mount Holly at the so-called Halfway Camp (Marker #34A) used during the Revolution. From Crown Point Road in Plymouth, we’ll take the trail over Saltash Mountain and visit the grave of the Unknown Revolutionary Soldier there, skirt Proctor Hill on our way to Mt Holly. Some Plymouth Historical Society folks will join us for this section. Spot cars at Kyle Perry’s, Perry Road Mt. Holly (802-259-2374).

DAY 6 Thursday, September 18, 2014 – From Kyle Perry’s on Perry Road in Mt Holly to Shrewsbury. At 9:00 a.m. starting near the location of the Halfway Camp during the Revolution (Marker #34A) we’ll walk through Shrewsbury, along an old section of the CPR, and end our day at Shrewsbury Community Church in Center Shrewsbury. Those who care to camp over are invited to do so at home of Barry and Barbara Griffith. They have both toilet and shower available (802-492-3573). Spot cars at Shrewsbury Community Church.

DAY 7 Friday, September 19, 2014 From the Shrewsbury Community Church to 3561 Creek Road, Clarendon. At 9:00 a.m. we’ll begin to walk downhill for a change, and enter the Otter Creek valley. There will be woods walking to VT Marker #38 on Route 103 where the Long Trail, and Green Mountain Railroad cross 103. We’ll continue on to Clarendon, and stop at the home of Jon and Cynthia Readnour on Creek Road. As on most overnight plans, we will need to notify the landowners beforehand about our numbers, or phone Readnours 802-773-0708. Spot cars at 3561 Creek Road, Clarendon.

DAY 8 Saturday, September 20, 2014 At 9;00 a.m. we’ll leave from Readnours’ up Creek Road to Center Rutland ending day near Beaver Pond on the Florence Road in Proctor. We’ll pass by Al Ransom’s Marker #41A on Creek Road, continue to Center Rutland via Campbell Road. Here we’ll visit Mead’s Falls on the Otter Creek, and Marker #42, then Marker #43 the site of Mead’s Tavern on the West Proctor Road. On West Street Proctor we’ll travel through the village and end the day’s walk at Marker #44A near Beaver Pond Road. Overnight will be at Jim Moore’s in the Garden of Eden, Proctor nearby (802-459-2837). Spot cars near #44A on Florence Road or along Beaver Pond Road.

Day 9, Sunday September 21, 2014 Proctor to Pittsford At 9:00 a.m. we’ll leave from Marker 44A and Jim Moore will take us through a short section of wooded CPR trail, to visit Hammond Bridge & Pitts Ford, then back to Creek Road and stop for the day at David Mills Farm in Pittsford. Spot cars at Dave Mills’ at 4974 West Creek Road, Pittsford. Overnight at Dave Mills farm.

Day 10, Monday, September 22, 2014 West Creek Road, Pittsford to Otter Creek Access Area and Governor Ormsbee’s Spring location. AT 9:00 a.m. we’ll walk on West Creek, which becomes Florence Road, Brandon, go down Union Road to visit Marker #47 and return to follow High Pond Road. We’ll go into Sudbury and stop for the day at Otter Creek Access Area. Overnight at 298 Fisher Road (Walter Phelps’) in Orwell ??, or closer, if possible. Spot cars at Otter Creek Access.

Day 11, Tuesday, September 23, 2014 Otter Creek Access Area to Richville Dam Access Area. Start walking at 9:00 a.m. along Route 73, visit marker on School House Road, cross Route 30, go down Vail Road, then follow to Whiting School foundation at 4-corners, then along West Road to Shoreham-Whiting Road to Richville Dam Access. Overnight at Walter Phelps at 298 Fisher Road Orwell. (802-948-2823) Spot cars at Richville Dam Access.

Day 12, Wednesday, September 24, 2014 Richville Dam Access to Elmendorf & Doolittle Roads. Meet at Richville Dam at 9:00 am. Go up Buttolph Road to visit Marker #56 then back, and take Shacksbury Road, cross Lemon Fair, and continue on Shacksbury to cross Route 74 to Elmendorf Road and Doolittle Road. Spot cars at Elmendorf Road, or Halfway Restaurant on Route 22A. Overnight on Barbara Bosworth and Tim Clemens property, corner Doolittle and 22A. (802-349-6315 or 207-458-1793) (697 Elmendorf)

Day 13 Thursday, September 25, 2014. Halfway Restaurant Route 22A to corner of Middle Road and Basin Harbor Road, near Hathorn Schoolhouse. Spot cars at Hathorn Schoolhouse (or at Pine Hill Cemetery?), corner West Market and Basin Harbor Roads, Bridport. To be decided. Overnight at Crown Point NY camping ground? To be decided. Or at Chimney Point?

Day 14, Friday, September 26, 2014 Marker #62, Bridport to Crown Point New York. Start at 9:00 a.m. at Marker #62, walk up Route 125 to Addison and Markers #63 and #64. Cross Champlain Bridge, and end day and trip at Fort. Spot cars at State Historic Site Crown Point Fort.
