Hello All,
Has everyone made it out to do some peeping? I’m sure some of you may not be happy about the weather getting colder, or the increased amount of traffic on the roads, but I do like this time of year. The temperature isn’t as hot, the bugs aren’t bad and the hills sure are beautiful. I do not like the lack of daylight though. I wish we could change the clocks so sunrise is abound 10am. Then we’d all have daylight after work. That’s just me though.
The topic of this late hour is actually the upcoming hike. Barry just emailed me some additional information and I thought everyone would like to know it. And it gave me a reminder to give you all a reminder. Here is what he wrote me to pass on:
I’m getting organized for our CPRA outing Saturday in Perkinsville. It will have three components. First, we will meet near the site to discuss what John Hawks was doing here at Hawks Mountain in 1748. Then, we will walk about 100 yards over a fairly level route to inspect the presumed Great Spring at the head of Encampment Brook. Finally, we will bushwhack along the side of Hawks Mountain over uneven terrain to consider where Hawks’ Encampment was, and to view another interesting alternative spring – about a mile round trip, up and back. Folks can join in any or all three parts as balance, stamina and interest allow. Perhaps you can pass on this information. I hope to see you soon! Barry
The official write up is as follows:
Saturday, October 11th, 10:00 am
We will meet at the Weathersfield school parking lot on VT Route 106, just south of Perkinsville Village. Nearby Hawks Mountain is named for Major John Hawks, who led a party constructing the nearby Crown Point Road in 1759. Old maps show “Hawkes Encampment” on the side of the mountain. Research indicates this was used by Hawks in 1748! Bring a lunch to eat at the presumed campsite with nearby spring. We will discuss Hawks, why he was here, and how we know.
