Friends of the Road Newsletter 2017-07-01

Hello Friends of the Road,
I have news to share of the good kind and bad kind. I don’t mean to rain on anyone’s (holiday) parade (the weather has done that enough!), but I will begin with the sad news of the passing of Norm Cyrs. He has been only a legend to me because I was never fortunate enough to meet him. I know he was the “glue” to the financial strength of the CPRA for many years prior to Jim Moore taking over the reigns as Treasurer. If any of you have any good stories about him to share, I’d love to hear about them. I read he hiked Mount Ascutney over 400 times and hiked the complete long trail at age 53 in only 21 days! His obituary can be read here: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/rutlandherald/obituary.aspx?n=norman-r-cyrs&pid=185951716
On the positive side, there might be reason to be optimistic about he bus trip to NH. We have received a few more participants, but we really hoped to get many more to make this a profitable trip, or at least a break even endeavor. It is not too late to solicit friends and family to sign up for the trip.
As part of the upcoming reenactment weekend at Hubbardton, there will be an unveiling of another Mt Independence/Hubbardton military road sign. The ceremony will be by the welcome center, but will later be installed by the Selleck Cabin site. It will be on Saturday, July 8th, at 3:30. NOTE the new time from previously published start time! After the ceremony, goodies will be served to also honor the 240th anniversary of the battle there.
One final topic is about activity in the Springfield area. As some of you may already know, there was an underpass built for the CPR under I91. There has been a sign to commemorate that for many years, but after a lot of abuse from the weather, it has become a splinter of its former self. But a sign has been created and members plan to install it this month. Pictures will be shared during a future mailing.
I hope all of you enjoy the holiday weekend. Be safe, have fun, but remember the true meaning of the day to all of us and our country.
