Friends of the Road Newsletter 2017-10-08

Hello Friends of the Road,
Can you believe it is October already? In my opinion, the chlorophyll seems to be sticking around later than normal. I feel bad for those who came to Vermont to see the foliage and were disappointed by being too early. Fall is a great time to get out and explore the woods without being attacked by mosquitos. So if you’re not watching the boys of summer locked into their playoff matchups, than perhaps you can visit an old railroad bed, mountain, or local park to enjoy.
Are you familiar with LIDAR? Wikipedia defines it as: Lidar is a surveying method that measures distance to a target by illuminating that target with a pulsed laser light, and measuring the reflected pulses with a sensor. Differences in laser return times and wavelengths can then be used to make digital 3D-representations of the target. In other words, LIDAR will allow you to see geographic shapes (i.e. stonewalls, or old roads) more clearly than previously possible! So I have hopes it will help people discover historic places without extensive archeological digs. Digs may still be required, but at least one would have a better idea there is something there without using expensive technology. So let’s hope our future edition of the Historic Markers of the Crown Point Road will include new findings!
A week from today, on Sunday October 15th, at 1pm, the Crown Point Road Association annual meeting and potluck dinner will be held. I’ve been to a few of these now, and it is a good time with good people. The guest speaker always puts on a good show and does their best to educate the audience. There may be some boring financial and other business matters to discuss prior to the guest speaker, but you’ll have the opportunity to keep your mind occupied with tasty foods. As a bit of a teaser, there will be a new, never been seen before, product available for purchase, so bring your wallets & pocketbooks because you may want to buy one! Below is the contents of an attractive poster that our own Tom Hughes put together. I hope to see many of you at the meeting, and if not, you’ll certainly hear from me in the weeks to come with other CPRA related info.

Join us at our annual pot luck with speaker!
