Friends of the Road Newsletter 2018-02-03

Hello Friends of the Road,
I hope you all have been using these days of less daylight to catch up on your reading. I must confess that I have not. I have done some, but my “to read” pile is growing rather than shrinking. There seems to be no shortage of authors publishing new books on old subject matter. That is good for us history lovers. Sometimes a new perspective on something re-sparks an old flame. Hopefully when you receive this year’s CPRA mailing, you will be excited about our calendar of events and your old flame for our favorite military road will ignite. In the meantime, put another log on the fire, and grab a warm blanket. If you believe in Punxsutawney Phil, we’ve got a ways to go before we see green grass and flowers growing.

For those of you in the area, who want to get out on a Friday night for some fun, I’ve got a recommendation for you. Our own Vice President Barry Griffith will be giving a lecture on February 16th, at 7PM, at the Rogers Island Visitors Center. The talk will be made to the Adirondack Chapter of the New York State Archaeological Society. Refreshments to follow. I have seen this lecture before, and really enjoyed it. To find out about Rogers Island, visit their website: http://www.rogersisland.org

Below is a brief write-up to capture your interest. Due to budget constraints, I can’t show you a trailer for the event. At least the best parts of the show won’t be spoiled by watching the commercials, right?

Presentation on John Small

The Great Warpath over the Hudson River and Lake Champlain was the scene of much activity during the French and Indian War. When French defenders retreated to Canada in 1759, British General Amherst ordered a road built from Crown Point to the Fort at No. 4 on the Connecticut River. The Crown Point Road Association (CPRA) is dedicated to a study of the Road, important to the settlement of Vermont. Noted “road builders” include Jeffery Amherst, Robert Rogers and John Stark. However, a little known British officer played a key role in the construction of the Crown Point Road. CPRA member Barry Griffith will share the fruits of his research on the interesting life and times of Lt. John Small.
