Hello Friends of the Road,
Soon you’ll be hearing more from me as I come out of Winter hibernation fully. My eyes are still half shut and doing my best to keep the CPRA propaganda machine running smoothly. Allow me to correct myself. We don’t spread propaganda of course, and I have a team of people helping me. I hope you are all doing well and looking forward to Spring as I am. I have really enjoyed Winter and thankful it has been white so long. It makes the season much more enjoyable for me. Soon the Winter birds will start getting other welcome company, such as Robins, and the sounds of Canadian geese flying overhead.
The board has met a record number of times this “off-season” and have been incredibly productive toward a new year of outings, along with some new merchandise. I won’t spoil the surprise at the moment, but they should be items for the collectors of the group. We have also been making good progress toward a very long term goal of a new Markers Guidebook. The hardest part (for me) was to start it, and thanks to help from a number of individuals, it has started rolling into a big snowball as it comes rolling down the mountain. As the temps warm up, I expect it will slow down as people will be busy doing other things, but rest assured, the work will keep going towards the goal of a new release sometime in the next 100 years. Ok, hopefully a little sooner than that.
To keep with the theme of historical content, I will share a video about a place in Shrewsbury Center. There was an outing in 2020 that visited the location, so it should look familiar to some of you. The owner of the property was very kind to give us a tour of the place. Here is the video: https://www.mychamplainvalley.com/ask-the-expert/vermont-historical-society/this-place-in-history-smith-maple-crest-farm/

If you’re interested in more video, there was an online event in January organized by the coalition that operates Fort Ticonderoga. The video they produced gives a good overview of the Crown Point Road. For you die hard “roadies”, you may not learn much, but it is a good refresher for most. You can find it on Facebook, but I believe you can watch it without being a Facebook user by going to this link: https://www.facebook.com/FortTiconderoga/videos/175568823907525/
That is all I have for now. Today is a bit of a messy day outside, so not a bad day to catch up on things and watch some videos. So until we meet again (in person or virtually), be well, and keep up your interest in history!
